Take advantage of additional flexible learning options during the summer. In addition we offer “minimesters” this fall that will allow students to take accelerated classes.
Fall 2025 – Survey Courses
Survey courses are designed for students with little or no previous knowledge in a subject area with the intention of providing a broader survey necessary for later study at the upper level.
Fall 2025 – General Education Courses
These general education courses focus on research and academic writing emphasizing academic argument, information retrieval, analysis and documentation.
Fall 2025 – HIST 300
The goal of HIST 300 is to provide students with all of the tools they will need to do the work of the History major.
Fall 2025 – Upper Division Courses
Upper division courses offer a directed look at a specific geographic region, topic, or time period, and require in-depth reading and writing in the given subject area.
Fall 2025 – Professional Formation Courses
HIST 309, HIST 450, HIST 460 professional formation courses are major-based three-course sequence supporting professional development.
Fall 2025 – Junior Seminars and Capstones
HIST 490 is a capstone course reserved for History majors in their final semesters in the program. HIST 493 (internship) may be substituted for HIST 490.
Fall 2025 – M.A. Program and Graduate Certificate Program
The history department offers a variety of graduate courses in European, North American, and trans-Atlantic history, as well as courses in the field of public history.

These general education courses focus on research and academic writing emphasizing academic argument, information retrieval, analysis and documentation. These courses are open to all, regardless of major or prerequisites, and count for General Education credits.
The goal of HIST 300 is to provide students with all of the tools they will need to do the work of the History major. The course covers such topics as the philosophy of history, the critical reading of primary and secondary sources, library and archival research, forms of historical writing, logic and argumentation, and the scholarly documentation of historical sources. History 300 is required for all History majors, and is open to History majors only.
Upper division courses offer a directed look at a specific geographic region, topic, or time period, and require in-depth reading and writing in the given subject area. Open to any major.
HIST 309, HIST 450, HIST 460 professional formation courses are major-based three-course sequence supporting professional development. These one-credit courses are taught by history faculty with cooperative support from Career Services. They are designed to comprehensively prepare history majors for their launch into the professional world after graduation, from careers exploration and planning to self-representation and job search skills.
HIST 490 is a capstone course reserved for History majors in their final semesters in the program. HIST 493 (internship) may be substituted for HIST 490.
