Christopher Ewing's research project examines the history of race and gay rights in the Federal Republic of Germany. Drawing on printed publications, erotic imagery, and oral testimonies, this study interrogates how racial exclusions and racialized desires could exist alongside calls for antiracist solidarity that permeated German gay activism since the collapse of Nazism in 1945. Though rooted in Germany, his research shows how international forces, including decolonization, transatlantic alliances, sex tourism, and labor migration, contributed to racialized assumptions that Islam represents a fundamental threat to LGBT rights in contemporary Europe. He is currently working on a study of how the exclusion of lesbian women from the West German gay rights movement in the 1970s and 1980s further enabled racial exclusions. His teaching interests include LGBTQ+ history, modern European history, and oral history.
