History Graduate Student Association

The History Graduate Student Association (HGSA) is an independent student group
which seeks to provide history graduate students at VCU with opportunities to gather
throughout the school year to encourage a sense of community within the program and
to explore history-based events and opportunities in the Richmond area. All history
graduate students are members, invited to events, and encouraged to suggest activities
in which they might like the HGSA to take part.

Events of the 2017-2018 school year included a Fall social for students and professors
to get to know each other, the Unhappy Hour at the Edgar Allen Poe Museum, the
Grand Illumination at Colonial Williamsburg, an Oregon Trail Game Night, a Civil War
Battlefield road trip, and end of the year celebration for those graduating from the
program.

Possibilities for 2018-2019 are activities aiding in a historic cemetery clean-up in
Richmond, a tour of the State Capitol, exhibits at the Virginia Museum of History and
Culture, a trip to Maymont Park, History Happy Hours at the American Civil War
Museum, the Black History Museum, and Christmas at Agecroft Hall, as well as
traditional social events.
