History at the Movies!
VCU History welcomes everyone back for the 2022-2023 academic year. To celebrate, we are inviting our students, and the whole VCU community, for a night out at the historic Byrd Theatre. Professor Leigh Ann Craig will offer an introduction and discussion at our screening of Ridley Scott’s 2021 film "The Last Duel" starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer. Come enjoy a night at the movies, as well as a discussion about historical facts known and unknown, and about the adaptation and use of history in modern media.
About 'The Last Duel'
'The Last Duel' is a thought-provoking drama set in the midst of the Hundred Years War. Based on actual events, the film unravels long-held assumptions about France's last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two friends turned bitter rivals. When Carrouges' wife, Marguerite, is viciously assaulted by Le Gris, she stepped forward to accuse her attacker, an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy. The ensuing trial by combat, a grueling duel to the death, places the fate of all three in God's hands.
